Best TV size for a bedroom

It depends on how far the bed is from the wall, and how high you sit in it.

The short answer2 min read

Measure from where your head rests in bed to the TV wall. From 6 feet, a 44- to 60-inch TV fills the recommended 30–40° of your view; from 8 feet, 59–80 inches; from 10 feet, 74–100 inches. For a typical bedroom with the bed 7 to 9 feet from the wall, that makes 55 to 75 inches the usual fit, with 65 in the middle. Mount it higher than in a living room because you sit higher in bed: Vogel’s suggests about 60 inches to the screen’s center for bed viewing, and a tilting mount angles it toward you.

Size by bed distance

Measure from your eyes (roughly where your head rests on the pillows) to the wall where the TV will go:

Bed to TV wallFills 30–40°Common choice
5 ft37–50 in43 in
6 ft44–60 in50 or 55 in
7 ft52–70 in55 or 65 in
8 ft59–80 in65 in
9 ft66–90 in75 in (65 for a relaxed 29°)
10 ft74–100 in75 in

These use the same viewing-angle band as any room: about 31–33° for SMPTE’s reference distance and 40° for THX’s cinema guideline. If the bedroom TV is mostly for news and falling asleep, the smaller end is fine; for films, aim for the middle of the band.

How high to mount it

In bed you sit higher than on a sofa, and often lean back:

  • Vogel’s suggests about 60 inches (152 cm) to the screen’s center for bed viewing.
  • LG allows mounting as high as about 5.9 feet for bed viewing, with an adjustable mount.
  • Measure yourself: sitting upright on a mattress about 25 inches high, most adults’ eyes are 54 to 57 inches from the floor (adding ANSUR II median seated eye heights). Leaning back on pillows lowers your eyes and tips your head back.

A screen centered near your upright eye height, or slightly above it, with a tilting mount angled down toward the bed, is the comfortable answer for most bedrooms. See how high to mount a TV.

Bedroom practicalities

  • Dresser or wall? A TV on a dresser usually ends up lower than ideal for bed viewing; a wall mount gives you the height.
  • Mount into studs. Bedroom walls are usually drywall; follow your mount’s rules (some forbid drywall-only installs).
  • Windows. A window opposite the TV will reflect on it during the day; check from the bed with a mirror.

Questions people ask

What size TV for a 12 × 12 bedroom?

If the bed is about 7 to 8 feet from the TV wall, a 55- to 65-inch TV fills the recommended 30–40° of your view. A 50-inch is fine if the bed is closer or the TV is mainly for casual watching.

How high should a TV be in a bedroom?

Higher than in a living room. Vogel’s suggests about 60 inches (152 cm) to the screen’s center for viewing from bed, and LG allows mounting as high as about 5.9 feet for bed viewing with an adjustable mount. Measure your own eye height sitting in bed.

Is a 65-inch TV too big for a bedroom?

Not if the bed is at least about 6.5 feet from the wall: from there a 65-inch screen fills 40° of your view, THX’s cinema angle. Closer than that it starts to feel very large for everyday viewing.
