Centered at your eye height, you look straight ahead. Top of the picture: 8.4° up (cinema designers cap the front row at 45°).

How it works

The calculator places the screen’s center at your eye height when it can, and otherwise as low as the furniture underneath allows. It then works out the angle from your eyes to the center of the screen and compares it with THX’s 15° guideline.

  • Eye height: 42 inches for a sofa (Samsung’s figure); recliners about 4 inches lower (the UNIC cinema handbook gives 2–6 inches); in bed, your mattress height plus about 30 inches, the ANSUR II median seated eye height; standing, about 62 inches.
  • Under the TV: a console adds a 2-inch gap, or 4 inches above a soundbar (Sonos Arc Ultra’s minimum). A fireplace adds 4 inches above the mantel.
  • The limit: 15° above your eye line (THX). Cinema designers allow up to 25° for the front row and cap the angle to the top of the picture at 45° (UNIC); ergonomic guidance for screens prefers slightly below eye level (ANSI/HFES 100).

Over a fireplace, the height is only half the question. TV makers’ operating limits are 104°F (Samsung, LG, Sony) or as low as 95°F (TCL, Hisense examples), so measure the wall temperature with the fire lit before mounting. See TV above a fireplace.

Questions people ask

How high should a TV be mounted from the floor?

For sofa viewing, with the center of the screen about 42 inches from the floor (Samsung’s seated eye-height guidance). The bottom edge then depends on the size: about 28.5 inches for a 55-inch TV, 26 for a 65-inch and 23.5 for a 75-inch.

How high is too high for a TV?

THX suggests keeping your line of sight within 15° of the screen’s center. That allows a center up to about 68 inches from 8 feet away and 74 inches from 10 feet.

How high should a TV be above a console?

Leave a few inches between the console top and the bottom of the TV, more if a soundbar sits there: Sonos asks for at least 4 inches between an Arc Ultra and the TV.
